Thermal degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose to flammable volatile products and chars is discussed, with attention given to tar fractions, dehydration of sugar units, fission of sugar units and production of highly reactive carbonaceous residues. In particular, the pyrolysis products yielded by cellulose at 300 C under nitrogen, by cellulose and treated cellulose at 550 C, and by xylan and treated xylan at 500 C are tabulated. Heat contents of such fuels as Douglas fir lignin, larch, ponderosa pine, aspen, and Douglas fir bark are also analyzed. It is suggested that destructive distillation methods of wood residue treatment could be profitably replaced by fixed-bed pyrolysis or fluid-bed gasification to yield various types of fuel that are in demand.
