Abstract

This article provides guides to scholars of libraries, archives, museums, conservation, and information science about how to enhance the richness of the work on the history of their field. It does so by drawing on several literatures as models of scholarship for them: the history of information technology, social informatics, and business and economic history of technology. The article discusses the boundaries of information history and identifies research problems related to the following themes: the transformative role of technology, professionalization of the information domains, education of information workers, information work, business and economic history, intellectual history, the information society, information outside of the work environment, and science information and informatics.
