Abstract

United States music sound archives, like sound archives throughout the world, continue to collect and preserve recent sound recordings while simultaneously coping with a century's cumulation of deteriorating physical formats and the ever-present challenges to the ideal of providing the fullest possible access to the recordings. This article provides a brief historical overview of music sound archives in the United States, followed by an examination of some of the more pressing issues involving the acquisition, preservation, and cataloging of sound recordings. The author discusses recent developments in sound archiving, how some United States archives have reacted to these developments, and possible directions for the future of sound archiving.
