Considerable field experience of two
promising galloping suppression techniques is
presented. The use of Hoop Spacers has proven
to be an effective means of applying the technique
of despacering to horizontal , twin bundle
construction. The other technique involves the
application of helical straking devices, named
Air Flow Spoilers, to maintain a varying aerodynamic
profile. Performance of these galloping
controls has been measured using observations
made by utility personnel, by analyzing line
operating records and by the employment of
electronic monitoring systems. Details of one
operational monitoring system is presented.
