The main theses of this paper are the following: Any non-random lexical list can be considered as a dictionary. The first dictionaries are more often monolingual than bilingual.(a) Dictionaries may have been in existence before the appearance of writing, since oral dictionaries are attested in the 20th century, (b) Such dictionaries may have been monolingual (although there is no proof for this contention).Dictionaries and encyclopedias share common origins.Systematicity of treatment (e. g. for the order of entries) has been a very gradual process.
