Abstract

Writing languages without written modality: analysis of composing and transcribing the Italian Sign Language This article presents the preliminary results of a research on the use of SignWriting (SW) to write the Italian Sign Language (LIS). It analyzes three texts, all based on the "Pear Story" by Chafe (1980): a text transcribed in SW from a face-to-face signed narrative, and two texts directly created in LIS-written using SW. The authors analyze the differences and similarities between the texts, which arise from a different mode of communication. Finally, they point out that SW allows to develop new analysis of the LIS and stimulates metalinguistic reflections that were impossible without an adequate system of notation.
