We establish rigorously that in space dimension d greater-or-equal, slanted 3 finite temperature lattice gauge theories with gauge group SU(N) or U(N) undergo a phase transition from a confining phase at strong coupling g to a phase with free (infinitely heavy) quarks at weak coupling. The proof is based on the “infrared bounds” of Fröhlich, Simon and Spencer. It yields bounds on the transition temperature that allow one to go to the continuum limit in the time direction and to the limit N → ∞, g2N fixed.
