This pa.per describes a new measuring equipment of the equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD)
on an insulator surface for transmission lines. The measurement of the ESDD has been made
mainly by lhe brushing method l. This new equipment is consisted of a monitor with
specially designed electrodes and a current/ESDD converler, and designed as an automatic
measuring system. This equipment has the following two advantages : The one is that the
cumulative contamination could be checked on real time. The other is that it is possible to get
the precise ESDD of the insulators in use because the detective sensing head (DSH) has almost
the same shape with them. Additionally, the equipment is designed compact in size and
weight as it can be installed on the towers.
