Teacher Gradings and OfSTED Inspections: help or hindrance as a management tool?

, , , and . School Leadership & Management, 18 (2): 257-270 (1998)

Abstract

School inspections following the framework of the Office for Standards in Education (OfSTED) in England involve the observation and grading of the teaching performance of individual staff. Since Easter 1996 these have been reported to the headteacher. Research in secondary schools has discovered substantial and widespread discrepancies between inspectors gradings of `very poor teachers and schools own judgements. Possible reasons for the discrepancies are examined and some criteria for valid assessments of teaching performance are identified.
