The paper summarizes the results of an extensive
research program on the switching surge perfor
mance of phase-to-phase insulation of transmissionlines,
carried out in the last few years in the
framework of the lOOOkV Project.
Preliminary information is also given concerning the
switching impulse strength of the phase-to-earth insulation
at the tower, with particular reference to
non conventional supports. The strength characteristics,
combined with available data on the overvoltages,
are used to estimate the minimum clerances required
to withstand the switching surges. Considerations
on the space occupation are presented, taking
into account the requirement to withstand the
operating voltage under severe contamination.
