This paper summarises a thesis written by the author Ridge 1992 which examin
the effect of bending-tension fatigue on the endurance of wire rope. ·1
parameters relevant to a study of this kind of fatigue can be identified from a revi
of the work previously performed on the two constituent forms of bending- tem
fatigue: bending over sheaves and tension-tension fatigue. Apparatus has bi
designed which allows variation of each of the major variables. This apparatus 1
been used to carry out an extensive investigation into the relative effect on bendi'
tension endurance. Tests in bending over sheave and tension-tension fatigue h;
also been performed to determine the relative influence of bending-tension fatig
Finally a model is proposed which allows the prediction of bending-tension fati!'
behaviour from a knowledge of the bending over sheaves and tension-ten~'
fatigue endurance.
