Abstract
This commentary attempts to build up a narrative about Latin American cultural studies from a particular point of view which sees the mass media as a fragment within the broad scope proposed by the project of cultural studies. The main focus is to identify the emergence of this field, its position in relation to other academic disciplines, and its objects of study, mainly the reception studies. Although there are features of Latin American cultural studies that are unique to this region, the author concludes that the present situation reveals that Latin American cultural studies is tied to the broad current movement of this field of study.
