Abstract
The paper summarizes research and development
efforts conducted to improve the design of
high voltage transmission line structures ensuring
the dual purpose of economy and reliability.
In order to get a wider knowledge on the
behavior of the 120- 400 kV overhead lines a
statistical analysis of the long term operating
experience has been carried out.
To remove uncertainity associated with
quantifying the actual loads and transmission
line responses an experimental high voltage
line and a full-scale tower testing station
have been erected.
The paper describes the nature of the ful.l
scale test program, the instrumentation developed
specifically for it and the experimental
results to date.
Given this data base a design methodology
ensuring a more consistent and predictably
safety level has been adopted. Due to the
probability baaed design significant economic
benefits a.re expected to result from more
rational l oading selection and better control
of service outage occurrences reaul ting from
different geographical and meteorological conditions.
