Thermodynamic Properties of Mixtures of Electrolytes in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract

The mean apparent molal volume of two electrolytes in an aqueous solution may be calculated from known values of theapparent molal volume of each electrolyte in the binary solution whose ionic strength is that of the ternar so1u;tion. Therelatively small discrepancies between the values so calculated and experimental data can be representeg by simple algebraicexpressions, Le., ‘‘interaction terms.�? Combination of the interaction terms with the basic equation leads to equationswhich may be differentiated to yield explicit expressions for partial molal volumes. The calculations agree well with “experimental�?determinations of partial niolaLvolumes. The forms of the curves representing the changes in enthalpy occurringwhen two solutions of the same ionic strength are mixed are comparable with the corresponding volume curves. Somegeneral relations have been observed between the constants of equations for the enthalpies of binary solutions of electrolytesof the 1-1, 1-2, 2-1 charge types. These relationships when extended by further experiments promise to make it possibleto base predictions of enthalpies of solutions upon the constitutions of the electrolytes involved.
