Abstract

In order to insist upon the non-hieratic approach to Scripture among the Christians, I have suggested that we should call early Christianity, the new “religion of the Book,” a “religion of the paperback.” Christianity was able to transform the traditional frameworks of education through the establishment of a system in which the single great book of God and the whole library of human books constantly called upon and echoed each another. This system would develop and flourish up to the end of the Middle Ages: within it, the authority of the text officially belongs to God, but in practice it remains in the hands of the community of believers.
