Abstract

A simple method is used to approximate free boundaries in finite difference numerical simulations, based on the concept of a fractional volume of fluid. The flexibility and efficiency of the method is demonstrated by means of an incompressible hydrodynamics code that uses the volume of fluid technique to track free fluid surfaces. Sample calculations with the new code show that it works well for a wide range of complex problems.
