Translation procedures adopted for translating Chinese empty words into English

Abstract
In translation, a procedure is a way of doing something; in the practice of translation, it means the way of converting source sentences into corresponding translations (Delisle, Lee-Jahnke and Cormier 1999: 191; Palumbo 2009: 134). Translation procedures “are used for (translating) sentences and the smaller units of language” (Newmark 1988: 81). They are highly individual, that is to say, translators may employ different procedures to produce what they consider as optimal translations (Lörscher 1991: 70). Selecting suitable procedures depends not only on the translators’ considerations of equivalence, but also on their translation strategies, which are ways of translating larger units of language, such as whole texts.
