Zusammenfassung

In classification and dating, respectively identification of a historical coin the reading of the textual information present on the coin plays an important role. Automatic coin classification systems devel- oped for modern coins and current research approaches for automatic recognition of historical coins use physical and visual properties of a coin, but have up to now neglected the textual information present. Recent advances in optical character and symbol recognition have already made appli- cations possible in historical document processing, which have rated as too difficult for automatic processing in the past. This article discusses the assumed potential for the application of methods from the field of optical character and symbol recognition to the field of coin recognition from photo- graphic images of historical coins, along with the particular preconditions required and challenges faced. The results of an experiment in character segmentation on images of modern coins and a comparison of the problems encountered therein with the collages faced in character candidate segmentation on ancient coins helps to pre-estimate the feasibility of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) on images of historical coins.
