Abstract
The papers deals with the scientific background and selected
results of Cellpack's Silicone Rubber (SR) Programme,
which was started in late 1994. The necessity for
establishment of the programme is briefly discussed.
From the investigated material properties, in this contribution
the results are presented, which focus on the hydrophobicity
of the SR-surfaces. To evaluate this essential
property, there are no standards available yet. For this
reason, accelerating ageing procedures using either simultaneous
voltage and moisture stresses or UV-radiation are
applied to investigate the hydrophobicity resistance. The
transfer of hydrophobicity is measured by a layer penetration
test. These results are related to the results gained by
the salt fog procedure for composite insulators, which is
described in IEC 1462 Draft and Type II Report.
