Аннотация
The old 'working load x factor of safety'
approach to transmission line design is questioned.
Long experience with this approach has not entirely
avoided accidents which can be directly attributed
to the unwitting use of the factor of safety approach
and it is suggested that design loads should be
based on ultimate or limit loads. This is by no
means a new concept but, with the imminent publication
of an IEC Recommendation on tower loadings
which is effectively based on the ultimate load
concept, this approach is reviewed and compared
with the factor of safety approach. Discussion is
limited to those areas of the world not having the
snow and ice load problems and deals with loadings
and not probabilities.
