HIGH TEMPERATURE TESTS OF ACSR CONDUCTOR HARDWARE

Abstract

Maximum utilization of existing transmission lines is necessary due to the difficulties and costs associated with rights-ofway acquisition and line construction. The current carrying capacity of an overhead line is a function of electrical, mechanical, and thermal phenomena acting upon the conductor and its supporting hardware. The maximum operating current of a line is limited by the allowable hardware temperature,conductor loss of strength, and conductor sag. This paper reports hardware temperature data obtained by laboratory tests of four common ACSR conductors. A summary of the temperature data and linear equations and graphs relating conductor and hardware temperatures are included. As part of the laboratory tests, some conductor loss of strength data were collected and are also reported. This study indicates that the line hardware can operate safely up to conductor temperatures of 2oooc.
