Contextual and Co-Textual Guidance Regarding Synonyms in General Bilingual Dictionaries

Abstract
Sameness of meaning can be displayed in various ways in bilingual dictionaries. This paper focuses on the presentation and treatment of synonyms.1 A brief discussion is given of the typical venue, i.e. as target language items in the translation equivalent paradigm. This is followed by a look at some aspects of translation equivalents relevant to the inclusion and treatment of synonyms. The types of lexical items that participate in relations of synonymy are indicated. The main focus is on the need for contextual and co-textual guidance and the way in which the lexicographic functions of a given dictionary play a role in determining the nature and extent of this guidance.
