Abstract
Optical fibre links are attractive for power system communications because they have high capacity and because
the cables are compact and non-metallic. Ways of incorporating them with overhead transmission lines are presented
in part I and it is concluded that a fibre cable inside one of the conductors is the most suitable arrangement. The salient
design requirements are noted and the successful start of a field trial of the first length of such a composite -
conductor as an earth wire is described. Various system aspects are considered and an example, appropriate to the
CEGB, given of a possible network initially for telephone traffic.
Part II contains the details of the design, development and manufacture of the optical fibre cored conductor as
supplied for the trial and includes its properties in relation to its use as an earth wire or as a phase conductor. Fittings
and accessories are discussed as well as the possible effects of lightning and short-circuit cu"ents. Finally some aspects
of installation and of future development work are considered .
