Abstract
BACKGROUND: Pharmacology can be defined as the study of
substances that interact with living systems through chemical processes,
especially by binding to regulatory molecules and activating or inhibiting
normal body processes 1. In recent years there is revolution in the field
of Pharmacology, with the discovery of many new molecules of drugs,
new drug development technology, new drug delivery system, so also in
the course and make the learning more difficult. Though in the recent
years various teaching-learning methods are adopted in the whole World,
no common methods of teaching have been able to fix this problem so far
2. So there is need of evaluation of student's perception regarding the
different teaching-learning methods of Pharmacology in different country
to create its own data. This type of study had never been conducted before
at the Burdwan Medical College, West Bengal, India. In this perspective
my present study will play an important role for improving medical
education in future. OBJECTIVE: The objective of my study was to
evaluate the perception of different teaching-learning methods of
Pharmacology among the 2nd M.B.B.S. students of my institution.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pre validated, predesigned 20 points
based structured questionnaires were distributed among randomly
recruited 92 students of 2nd M.B.B.S. 2009-2010 batch, during the 2nd
week of the January 2012. The response of the questionnaires was
assessed in the five point Likert scale. RESULTS: Out of the 94.56%
responders, Male students were 95.16% and female were 93.33%. 39
students (44.83%) agreed and 41 students (47.12%) students strongly
agreed that chalk& talk used as the most common teaching-learning
method in undergraduate pharmacology. 35 students (40.23%) agreed
and 37 students (42.53%) strongly agreed that chalk& talk was better
than power point presentation as a teaching-learning method. While 40
students (45.98%) agreed and 44 students (50.57%) strongly agreed that
power point presentation and chalk& talk as a combined, was the best
teaching-learning method in undergraduate pharmacology in the
Burdwan Medical College, West Bengal ,India. But 20 students (22.99%)
