Abstract
The contribution describes the essential
lll'C!Chanical and optical characteristics of graded
index and single mode fibres with respect to their
use in self supporting aerial cables. The two main
designs of optical fibre aerial cables which are
lll'C!tallic armoured and non metallic armouring are
described. Their benefits and problems are
discussed and a guidance for the choice of the
cable design with respect to the required purpose
is given. It will be shown that both metallic and
non metallic armoured aerial cables will find
their place in the network erection strategy of
power utilities. In both cable designs graded
index and single mode fibres can be used to
fulfill the information transmission demand of the
user.
