Abstract

Since 2015, we have observed a large number of refugees immigrate into Germany, a significant proportion of whom are under the age of eighteen. As refugees’ successful incorporation into German society is strongly influenced by their access to the German educational system, scrutinizing the young refugees’ educational trajectories becomes crucial. Measuring the educational trajectories of refugee adolescents is challenging due to the complexity of the German educational system and refugees’ unfamiliarity with this system, particularly if they arrived very recently in Germany. The longitudinal study “ReGES—Refugees in the German Educational System” aims at collecting data about young refugees’ educational paths in Germany. The aim of this paper is to describe how these data are collected, the challenges we faced in collecting them, and the solutions we applied to overcome these challenges.
