Abstract
This paper describes the results of
investigations into the c~use of certain
flashovers which occurred to horizontally
mounted insulators in HVDe stations. Insulators
having various shed shapes were
subjected to contamination and wet tests
under horizontally and vertically mounted
conditions. Non-uniform wetting was identified
as the main cause of such flashovers.
Compared with vertically mounted insulator~,
a slight reduction was found in the contam~nation
withstand voltages of horizontally
mounted insulators for some shed profiles. A
shed shape is proposed as the optimum design
for horizontally mounted insulators not only
from the viewpoint of contamination but also
from wet withstand voltage.
