Insulators having various shed shapes were subjected to contamination and wet tests under horizontally and vertically mounted conditions. Non-uniform wetting was identified as the main cause of such flashovers. Compared with vertically mounted insulator~, a slight reduction was found in the contam~nation withstand voltages of horizontally mounted insulators for some shed profiles. A shed shape is proposed as the optimum design for horizontally mounted insulators not only from the viewpoint of contamination but also from wet withstand voltage.
