Abstract

Part of a special issue on international research from the Fulbright New Century Scholars 2006. The post-1980s growth in higher education in India has been noticeably different from the previous period. In the 1950s and 1960s, enrollment grew by 13 to 14 per cent each year, and until 1980, the growth of higher education was largely confined to courses in languages and the humanities. However, since 1980, growth has been primarily in the private unaided institutions with an occupational focus. Now, the quality higher education sector remains small, the role of the government in funding higher education is marginal, and although private higher education has come to occupy center stage, it has not been able to gain public confidence. Strategic interventions at many levels are needed to address these concerns.
