Improved Corona Characteristics of Partially Semiconducting Glazed Suspension Insulators for Use at High Altitudes

Zusammenfassung

Suspension insulator units were tested in a pressure controlled vessel and the relationship between corona extinction voltage and the atmospheric pressure was obtained. The corona extinction voltage was reduced as the atmospheric pressure lowered. Corona characteristics were greatly improved by applying semiconducting glaze on the porcelain surface near a cap edge and a pin. The suspension insulator units with partial semiconducting glaze are recommended for use in transmission lines at high altitudes in order to suppress corona activities.
