Abstract
The ability to reliably predict the blast damage from vapour cloud
explosions finds use in the safety assessment of hazardous installations
and also in the design of such installations. The basic knowledge
and terminology necessary to understand the characteristics of blast
waves, the way they interact with structures and the response of
structures to blast loading is presented. Methods that can be used
for predicting the blast wave from a vapour cloud explosion, the
blast loading and the structural response are outlined and their
limitations discussed.
