Leveraging laptops in Florida middle schools: Changes in instructional practice and student technology use

.
Florida League of Middle Schools Journal, (2008)

Abstract

This article examines the changes in instructional practice and student use of technology in middle schools involved with a grant-funded laptop program. Sixteen middle schools were observed during the Fall and Spring semester of the 2006-07 school year using two standardized observation instruments. The findings show significant increases project-based learning, a transformation in the role of teachers in technology-enhanced classrooms to that of a coach and facilitator, and the use of technology by students as a learning and resource tool. The results also show a significant decrease in the use of curriculum-based software used to deliver instruction and an overall increase in software used for production. These findings corroborate previous research and highlight impact of the Leveraging Laptops program in Florida’s middle schools.
