The strength of corporatist ideology is too strong to just roll over. Content is expensive and difficult to produce unfortunately. - "we need more filters" - changing value system from hierarchical and competitive to collaborative and networked (what a load of crap honestly, these phillosophers just sit on their perch and preach about whatever their ideas are, and have no idea what this means in practice). Everyone will collaborate? I think not, capitalism rewards competition. -reason Babel fell is because they were too integrated -> mirrors today's efforts to standardize - problem is that all the examples are contrived 'neural networks' for example are not as successful as one might hope. Book needs some serious questions answered - am I looking at this from a qualitative POV or a quantitative one? or am I just offering pithy observations? - I think the differences between neural nets and expert systems are much less profound than simply looking at the way they solve problems. They must be looked at in context of the problems they are trying to solve. Where is the data coming from for the neural nets? I think the problem is really setting the rules up properly getting the data together. In both systems there is a real decision making process involved that has nothing to do with the computer. - technological culture may see a loss of boundaries between our 'natural' selves and the electronic extensions - 'wearing mankind as our skins' - McLuhan - writing amplifies human cognition - pretty dated book, again, I dislike the idea of 'wise sage' telling people what culture is all about, but perhaps I don't understand the rules for this area of study. I don't find his insights particularly compelling.
