Some of its tenets have been used in the research reported here to analyse important aspects of two bilingual English-Spanish/Spanish-English dictionaries of economics, commonly used by students to carry out their writing assignments. In addition, this paper offers insights into a new trend in specialized lexicography, pointing out that the compilers of specialized dictionaries should also aim to satisfy the needs of particular target groups. In our case, the target group corresponds, more or less, to Spanish university students. These dictionaries, however, show important differences related to the fact that whereas one, Pirámide, reflects an older and now discredited approach, insensitive to progress in dictionary theory and practice, the other, Ariel, represents a new development, possibly reflecting that of the monolingual learner's dictionary, with its links to corpus lexicography and user research.
