He was mostly basing this on d.antarctica and c.quitensis in Antarctica. There, temperature is more important: freezing common. Not so, marion (some other dude). I didn?t actually find him saying plants are responsive to temperature. He even spends a few pages citing people who found NAR to not be considerably reduced below 0oC Van ZInderen Bakker (in litt.) found P.cookii to bave a temperature maximum of 12oC, and for higher and lower temperatures to reduce the rate considerably. He seems to spend a lot of time stressing the harsh temperature conditions. Apart from a bit of peat on Kerguelen, all vegetation of the Antarctic seems to be post-glacial in origin. Tolerance is a pre-adaptation that allows an organism to survive, reproduce and spread in a new environment in which it finds itself.? ?The subantarctic and Antarctic floras do not appear to possess and adaptive features specific to their environment but do exhibit numerous characteristics commonly associated with Arctic and alpine plants in general?.
