Abstract
The basic nature of internal damping was investigated by isolating the system from other effects and merely considering a segment of stranded cable vibrated under pure bending load alone. Analogous dynamic and static experimental methods were developed, by the use of which the deforniationand energy relationships were determined. From these investigations, the predominant dry friction nature of internal damping in stranded cable was established. The basic properties of damping capacity, frictional force function and the influencing factors were revealed. The agreement between the static and the dynamic test results was very satisfactory.
