Abstract
In the last full decade for which statistics are available (the 1980s) nearly 500,000 people worked their way through graduate school to achieve ABD (all but dissertation) status. Of this, 250,000 do not have, nor will never earn, their degrees. Advice is given for getting through a dissertation. Included are hints on starting and getting through a doctoral program, as well as beginning an academic career.
