Some Considerations on the Translation of Poetic Metaphor: English-Spanish Phraseology

.
Congreso internacional de AEDEAN, (2003)

Abstract

This paper defines and examines the notion of inventive metaphor in the light of cognitive linguistics, and considers several metaphorical subsystems in English and Spanish. Cross-linguistic clashes in conceptual domains as well as the lexical and grammatical ramifications of such domains impose certain transference restrictions. We observe a lack of inter-linguistic parallel between conventionalized metaphors and poetic metaphors. The strongest constraints in the rendering of creative metaphors seemingly occur when the linguistic ramifications of an inventive metaphor into usage subsystems in the source language has no counterpart in the goal language. Based on data from an advanced translation course, this research has a practical bent and can contribute to a better awareness of the workings of metaphors and to an improvement in the translation skills of advanced students and translators in general.
