Abstract
A detailed evaluation has been made of the mechanical
properties of FRP materials made of unidirectional
glass fibres impregnated with either epoxy or
polyester resins. Such materials are used to make
composi te insulators for high voltage transmission
lines. Result of these measurements and a finite
element computation method have been used to assess
the mechanical stress distribution in the FRP core
of two types of composite insulators.
Complete composite insulators have been mechanically
tested to failure under static tension loads, pulsed
tension loads and a .combination of tension and bending
loads. The insulator cores failed at load
levels which agree well with measured mechanical
properties of the FRP materials.
