The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) as defined by the 3GPP emerges
as blueprint for a central architecture to provide Next Generation
Network (NGN) services. These services will merge the advantages
of traditional telephony networks with the benefits of internet services
and will be connected to the IMS over standardized interfaces. The
Open IMS Core project described in this paper mainly highlights the
central IMS network entities to enable the connection of NGN services
to IMS, the IMS Call Session Control Functions. The paper outlines
the components of the Open IMS Core as well as its dependencies upon
Open Source software plus its relevance for possible re-use in other
IMS related projects for building NGN services. Besides some implementation
details of the Open IMS Core, the paper also shows an overview of
performance in the FOKUS Open IMS Playground and gives a brief deployment
example of a simple messaging service which makes use of IMS capabilities.
