Abstract

Weather fronts shown on modern-day synoptic charts have become increasingly complex but bring uncertainty in interpretation among users. The Norwegian conceptual model of fronts, familiar to professional and many amateur users, is proving inadequate to describe actual events, while recent conceptual models have compounded the problem of meaningfully indicating weather changes on synoptic charts. This article discusses the problems, and queries whether fronts drawn on charts are necessary given the ready availability of many personalised products and meteorological parameters.
