Zusammenfassung

In the process of writing the first two fascicles of the Dictionary of Old English, the staff have encountered various problems, foreseen and unforeseen, tractable and more or less intractable. This article details some of these problems. After a brief introduction describing the general context of writing a dictionary based for the most part on undatable texts, the paper concentrates on the lexicographical dilemmas presented by various kinds of figurative language and on some of the difficulties encountered in defining words which occur in Latin contexts. Since some of these problems are not unique to this dictionary project, the strategies outlined here to handle these problems may be of interest to other lexicographers.
