Abstract

In Pakistan, especially in Karachi area, insulator contamination is the most serious design and maintenance problem in power transmission lines. W APDA, Pakistan and NGK, Japan cooperated to conduct the systematic insulator contamination survey along the trunk transmission lines from Karachi to Tarbela in Pakistan. Very high ESDD values were measured, approx. 0.8 mglcm2 was measured in Karachi area near seacoast and 0.4 - 0.5 mglcm2 even in the area near Jamshoro more than 100 km far from seacoast. In inland area, 0.03 - 0.05 mglcm2 were the max. values actually measured. Based on the measuring results, design ESDD values for all the sites investigated are proposed.
