Accelerated fatigue testing of wire ropes

, and .
(1986)

Abstract

The anticipated future demand for large tension members for offshore mooring systems prompts the acquisition of reliable fatigue performance data for large diameters(> 100 mm). The term wire 'rope' is used loosely in this article to refer to both spiral strand and rope constructions. These tethers will invariably experience random loading induced primarily by the wave forces throughout their operational lives, typically in the order of twenty years. A notable example of the use of such tethers in an offshore deep-water mooring system is Exxon's Lena guyed tower oil production platform 1 • Standing in over 300 m of water in the Gulf of Mexico, this compliant platform is anchored to the seabed by a number of 127 and 138 mm diameter spiral strand guy lines.
