Abstract
The article presents a case study on residents' movement in a Shanghai neighborhood in China on having their own community identity, power and space. It notes on the legal actions that Shi Lieqing took, a leader of the residents in the Green Garden New Village, in raising complaints against real estate developers in their town. He said that by acting on what he views as unhealthy in their community, he was helping the country by correcting inappropriate behavior of local government. In this regard, collective action encourages in promoting and constructing a community identity as well as defending the interests to citizenship.
