Colombia is experimenting with more public-private partnerships in higher education in an effort to increase student enrolments through private sector expansion. But allowing for-profit universities is still highly controversial and opposed by students and university rectors alike, according to the country’s former education minister Cecilia María Vélez.
In recent years, the government of Colombia has faced several obstacles in its attempts to catalyze socioeconomic progress, not the least of which has been working to end a drug war and regain control of most of the territory that had been lost to guerrilla groups. However, as Colombia enters a phase of economic stability and growth, it faces yet another enormous challenge: offering high-quality education to its citizens.

La universidad La Gran Colombia de Bogotá oficializó hoy un acuerdo con la Universidad Simbiosis de Pune, en el oeste de India, para intercambios estudiantiles, misiones educativas e investigaciones conjuntas.
La alianza permitirá a técnicos y tecnólogos de la Entidad y a todos sus servidores (planta y contratistas) obtener un título profesional en esta Institución Universitaria, o también hacer un postgrado, en modalidad presencial –inicialmente en Bogotá– o de forma virtual, a nivel nacional.
La Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar será sede del I Encuentro del Capítulo de Universidades Privadas de Ascun – Asociación Colombiana de Universidades.

Un proyecto de ley, que pasa a segundo debate, propone que el incremento del valor de las matrículas de las Instituciones de Educación Superior (IES) privadas sea proporcional a la calidad académica que ofrecen y que en ningún caso supere el índice de inflación o Índice de Precios al Consumidor (IPC) del año anterior.
El Consejo Superior de la Universidad Central designó oficialmente a Rafael Santos Calderón como nuevo rector de la institución. Santos reemplaza en este cargo al profesor Guillermo Páramo Rocha, quien lo ejerció durante el decenio 2003-2013.
