There is a high need for evidence-based psychosocial treatments for adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to offer alongside treatment as usual (TAU). Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is a promising psychosocial treatment. This trial investigated the efficacy of MBCT + TAU v. TAU in reducing core symptoms in adults with ADHD.. Interventions for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be inadequate for some patients. There is evidence that supplementation with L-methylfolate augments antidepressant agent effects and thus might also augment ADHD treatment effects by a common catecholaminergic mechanism.. BPS Blog post. For every girl with ADHD, there are three boys with the same diagnosis. But among adults, the gender ratio is more like 1:1. That’s a big discrepancy. So what’s going on?
In 2017, Aja Louise Murray and colleagues investigated possible predictors of childhood vs. later (adolescent/adult-onset) ADHD, and they found hints that girls tend to develop ADHD at a later age than boys. Now a team that includes the same researchers has investigated this explicitly and in their paper in Developmental Science, they’ve confirmed it seems to be the case, which could partially explain the discrepancy in the ADHD gender ratio between children and adults.
Letter. We thank Leon and colleagues1 for highlighting a topic, namely the role of QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) in the management of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that, due to space constraints, we could not address in our review.2. The prevalence of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder diagnosis appears to have increased in recent years, with much discussion on the subject in the popular press. This article discusses the role of mental health nursesx in the management of this often underdiagnosed and undertreated condition in adults, taking account of extended roles such as non-medical prescribers and the recently published clinical guideline by the National Instititue for Health and Care Excellence. There is a continued need to support shared decision making, encourage adherence to treatment and reduce the negativity surrounding the use of controlled drugs to manage this condition. Objective: Deficient planning is commonly observed among children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and is associated with several adverse outcomes. The current meta-analysis expands on previous reviews by examining performance and latency metrics across five tower planning task variants, in addition to applying metaregression techniques to examine potential moderating effects.. Several studies have investigated whether in utero exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) is associated with increased risk of developing mental‐ or behavioral disorders. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta‐analysis based on this literature.. To read the full article, log in using your NHS Athens details. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common and highly heritable neurodevelopmental disorder with a complex pathophysiology. Intracranial volume (ICV) and volumes of the nucleus accumbens, amygdala, caudate nucleus, hippocampus, and putamen are smaller in people with ADHD compared with healthy individuals. The authors investigated the overlap between common genetic variation associated with ADHD risk and these brain volume measures to identify underlying biological processes contributing to the disorder. . This study is not particularly persuasive.
The overall difference between children using screens for more than 2 hours or less than 30 minutes was tiny: only a 2.2 score difference in their attention problem scores.
Though the children using screens for more than 2 hours had a higher risk of clinically significant attention problems or significant ADHD symptoms, these problems only affected around 1% of the whole study sample. So these are very small numbers
Adults with a history of childhood attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Black drinkers are at elevated risk for alcohol problems and alcohol use disorder. Processes that increase risk for these distinct populations have not focused on in‐the‐moment behaviors that occur while drinking. The present study examined in‐the‐moment drinking characteristics (i.e., location, social context, day, time, drink type, speed of consumption) that may differ for individuals with and without ADHD histories or for Black and White drinkers. We also examined the interplay among these in‐the‐moment drinking characteristics to further understanding of contexts when risk may be momentarily increased.. Neuroimaging studies show structural alterations of various brain regions in children and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), although nonreplications are frequent. The authors sought to identify cortical characteristics related to ADHD using large-scale studies.. Login at top right hand side of page using your MPFT NHS OpenAthens for full text.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children across the UK. A look at its impact and what must be done to achieve equity for these particularly vulnerable children, so they might be able to reach their exceptional potential as they progress into adulthood.
We argue that current debates about attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be considered afresh using an evolutionary lens. We show how the symptoms of ADHD can often be considered adaptive to their specific environment. We suggest that, from an evolutionary point of view, ADHD symptoms might be understood to result from an ‘evolutionary mismatch’, in which current environmental demands do not fit with what evolution has prepared us to cope with. Initial diagnoses of ADHD in adulthood have increased tremendously in recent years. Making such diagnoses accurately is challenging because ADHD is a childhood-onset disorder and because many adults have an incentive for obtaining a diagnosis (e.g., access to stimulant medication or disability accommodations). Certain elements of a forensic perspective can lead to more accurate ADHD diagnoses in adults and targeted treatment for clients who genuinely need it, and more appropriate alternative clinical responses to those who do not. This article describes the research base for integrating forensic principles into clinical assessments of adults presenting with ADHD-related concerns, and provides a scientific model for such assessments, from referral through conclusions. This guideline covers recognising, diagnosing and managing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, young people and adults. It aims to improve recognition and diagnosis, as well as the quality of care and support for people with ADHD.
In England, there is a discrepancy between the prevalence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) ascertained from medical records and community surveys. There is also a lack of data on variation in recorded prevalence by deprivation and geographical region; information that is important for service development and commissioning.. There is a perception in the community that too many children are diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and treated with medication. Conversely, some experts believe the disorder could be underdiagnosed and that efforts should be made to improve diagnostic reliability.1, 2 Findings of studies in different countries have shown that many children who meet diagnostic criteria for ADHD—including impairment criteria—never receive a clinical diagnosis.3, 4 Rates of diagnosis vary considerably both between and within countries, with many variables affecting the likelihood of diagnosis. One key variable is whether somebody in the child's world—usually a parent or a teacher—notices problematic symptoms and raises concerns. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has long been a contentious and polarising issue in mental health care. Mental health nurses are regularly responsible for the care, treatment and care coordination of individuals with a diagnosis of ADHD. This means that mental health nurses are in one of the best positions to have a positive impact on the lives of people with ADHD. This article aims to be a refresher to mental health nurses of the lifetime health outcomes and risks associated with ADHD. This article discusses a multitude of factors, such as increased rates of substance abuse and addiction, higher instances of self-harm and suicide, reduced life expectancy, increased driving risk, poorer educational outcomes, and reduced professional outcomes. The role of the mental health nurse is central in supporting service users to seek appropriate, evidence-based treatment. Improving mental health nurses' understanding and information will enable practitioners to make informed decisions regarding the care and treatment of service users. Open access. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism are increasingly recognised in adults. For a diagnostic evaluation, parental information on childhood development is needed. However, no instruments that retrospectively describe neurodevelopmental problems in childhood are validated for evaluating adults. The 181-item parent-report questionnaire Five to Fifteen (FTF) is nevertheless frequently used for assessments in adulthood.
