Am Jahresende 2012 bezogen in Deutschland knapp 465 000 Personen über 65 Jahre Leistungen der Grundsicherung im Alter nach dem 4. Kapitel des Zwölften Buches Sozialgesetzbuch (SGB XII „Sozialhilfe“). Wie das Statistische Bundesamt (Destatis) weiter mitteilt, stieg die Zahl der Hilfebezieher im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um 6,6 %.
In Deutschland haben 464.836 Senioren ein so geringer Einkommen, dass sie "Grundsicherung" bekommen. Das sind so viele wie noch nie seit Einführung dieser Sozialhilfe. Besonders betroffen: Frauen im Westen. Die Statistik heizt die Debatte über Altersarmut an.
Die Zahl der Rentner, die sich was dazuverdienen, ist seit 2003 deutlich gestiegen. Laut Arbeitsagentur waren im Herbst mehr als 800.000 Minijobber älter als 65 Jahre. Die Linkspartei sieht in den Zahlen einen Beleg für wachsende Altersarmut.
Für alte Menschen ist Armut besonders deprimierend, diskriminierend und demoralisierend, weil sie dadurch nicht bloß an Lebensqualität einbüßen, sondern ihnen nach dem Arbeitsleben auch die Würde genommen und ein gerechter Lohn für ihre Lebensleistung vorenthalten wird.
