“Hay demasiadas universidades en España”. Esta frase es ya un lugar común en los debates sobre educación superior y se suele referir al sistema público (50 centros). Pero lo cierto es que la última universidad pública se levantó hace tres lustros y, sin embargo, en ese tiempo, el número de privadas se ha multiplicado por dos hasta llegar a las 31 actuales. Un crecimiento que ni siquiera la crisis ha detenido: desde 2008 han nacido seis y dos más están en camino. En un momento en que se habla continuamente de saturación universitaria y en plena crisis económica, ¿hay espacio para todos? “Pensamos en las personas que desean obtener una titulación para poder mejorar profesionalmente”, responde Esperanza Calderón, directora de Comunicación de la Universidad Internacional de La Rioja, una privada completamente online que nació en el filo de la crisis, en 2008.
El rector de la Universidad de Alicante, Manuel Palomar (Ontinyent, 1964), además de ser el presidente de turno de la Conferencia de Rectores de las Universidades Valencianas, acaba de asumir la presidencia de Xarxa Vives, que aglutina a 21 universidades del ámbito lingüístico catalán. El ministro de Educación, Cultura y Deporte, José Ignacio Wert, ha asegurado durante la sesión de control al Gobierno en el Congreso, que su política haya mermado el número de estudiantes universitarios el curso pasado y ha afirmado que esta "ligera" reducción se ha dado en la privada y no en la pública.
El rector de la Universidad Internacional de Andalucía (UNIA), Juan Manuel Suárez Japón, abogón ayer, en la inauguración de los cursos de verano de la sede de la Cartuja de Sevilla, por el derecho a la educación "sin caridad o filantropías privadas". Suárez Japón calificó de "preocupantes" las nuevas reformas universitarias, que dejarán "una universidad pública más pobre, menos dotada para investigar y generar conocimientos, y, por lo tanto, menos capaz de ser útil a la sociedad que la financia".

El sistema ideado para el acceso a la universidad para los mayores de 25 años favorece a las universidades privadas. El rector de la Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche, Jesús Pastor, reclamó ayer, en el transcurso de su intervención en el acto de apertura del curso, «una rigurosidad académica a la hora de autorizar titulaciones nuevas en las universidades privadas», en relación directa con la puesta en marcha de la Mare Nostrum, en El Campello, y la UCAM (Universidad Católica de Murcia) en San Juan; y en referencia a los estudios de Medicina (que la UMH imparte en su campus de San Juan).
