I was updating a presentation today and checking the links still worked from the last time I did this, back in October last year, so only a couple of months. In that time we've lost access to such tools as
Yandex is an excellent alternative to Google. Not only does it work in the same way, so you'll immediately be familiar with the interface, but it also provides extra functionality that goes way beyond anything that Google can offer. It's a real search engine for real information professionals. If you're tired and fed up with the limitations that Google places on you when you're trying to search, take a look at Yandex.
AlltheInternet search engine is a fairly straightforward multi search engine. The home page reminds me of what Yahoo! looked like about a decade or so ago, in that it's broken up into tile type elements, covering popular sites, check your email, games, social, news and so on. It's got a real old style 'portal' feel to it, but it's very US biased, so links to eBay, Craigslist and so on are pointless for those of us in the rest of the world. Also, it's not possible to change any of them, so you're stuck with what someone else has decided is important to you.
I was asked to take a look at Check Them, which purports to be a people search engine. It's US only and covers all 50 states. However, it left quite a nasty taste in my mouth, since the whole engine was based on fear.
I'm making access to these videos completely free of charge. You are welcome to use the collection for yourself or within your organisation, I really don't mind. Only two restrictions - please don't make commercial use of them, and attribute back to me with a link
Google really does seem set on a path of self destruction, at least as far as search engine functionality goes. They've changed the way that the search operator 'info:' works, and it's severely damaged the functionality.
In a blog post Google has said that it's making search results more local and relevant. What it's actually done is to make things much more difficult, and far more messy
You may have seen in the news in the last few days that Google has launched a new tool called 'My Activity' and if you have a Google account you can take a look at it. Basically it's a history come timeline tool that gathers together all of your activity online that Google can see.
If you're looking for images to use in a presentation or report, it can be a real pain to try and find ones that you can grab without legal problems. LibreStock is a free multi search engine that will check through over 40 different websites to find images that you can use. I quote from the site: "I know it's hard to understand complex legal licenses so let me break it down for you. all the photos indexed on LibreStock are licensed under the Creative Commons Zero license. this means you can use these pictures freely for any legal purpose." This means that they are free to use, even commercially, you can modify, copy and distribute, and you don't need to attribute.
If you're into medical information, take a look at MedNexus, which claims to be the Google for Medicine. I can't pretend to any great medical knowledge, so please take that into account when reading this post. Their 'about us' page says: "Through our search engine, you can find the most relevant content from a variety of sources: medical journals, patient forums, government health sites, etc. We want to empower patients to educate themselves and cut through the noise and pseudo-science of typical online health information. No more WebMD scares, no more endless Googling"
What a treasure trove of images! I finally got around to looking at the collection of digitised images from the New York Public Library, and it's a wonderful place to spend a while. Maps, posters, ancient texts, drawings and manuscripts - over 600,000 images, without use restrictions.
There's a petition out at the moment, "HM Government: act now to protect my statutory rights to a quality public library service" However, it would seem that most library and information professionals don't give a ......
If you're a Twitter fan, you'll want to take a look at Social Rank. It's a very neat tool to slice and dice the followers that you've got. Simply log in with your Twitter credentials and start to have fun with all of the different filters.
If you're looking for reasons to try out DuckDuckGo and haven't quite got around to it, perhaps this blog post might give you the push you need. Here are a few things that you can do on DDG that you can't do on Google - or if you can, it's more difficult.
Phil Bradley Training is being launched on Friday 7th October with two courses held in a central London location.
Earlier this year I sent out a survey asking what kind of training you wanted Many of you were kind enough to send me your thoughts. Since then, I’ve been developing what I hope will be a new type of training experience - effective, flexible, affordable – and designed to ‘last for life’.

Ashdown psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Fountain Way Hospital in Salisbury has hosted a trial book club for service users which has really taken off.
Life on a PICU ward can sometimes be hectic, but the book club gives people a safe place to share their ideas, experiences and feelings through reading, as well as develop communication and social interaction skills.
Occupational therapist Adenike Adedipe said "I had been running some group reading sessions on the ward, but joining forces with our Wiltshire [NHS] librarian enabled us to take a more evidence based approach and develop the existing group."
Since the release of the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education,1 academic libraries have implemented a wide range of initiatives and programs. Formats range from traditional library instruction that integrates information literacy concepts in “one shot” sessions to credit-bearing courses that are librarian led and offer course or discipline specific instruction. Delivery modes also range from face-to-face to online instruction. Increasingly, student assessment and indicators related to program impact have become the focus of ongoing discussions. Guidelines such as the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Standards for Libraries in Higher Education,2 Guidelines for Instruction Programs in Academic Libraries3 and The Value of Academic Libraries: A Comprehensive Research Review and Report4 offer direction related to student assessment and defining program impacts. These documents also reflect a recognition that information literacy and library instruction programs are varied in response to institutional needs
