In this introduction, the author contextualises the research into social stratification
in Serbia as a long-term project on the transformation of class structure in that country. The
researchers in this project have established how the systemic transformation in Serbia unfold-
ed, doubly conditioned by the more general European processes of postsocialist transforma-
tion and the specific conditions in Serbia. The surveys on representative samples of the adult
population in the whole of Serbia were conducted in 2003/2004,
2012 and 2018. The author lays out the methodological basis and
the contents of the studies included in the special issue
(Alternate title: "Exposed: Hapless Yes Men Played for Fools by Sneaky Serbian Stooge") Carl Gibson and Steve Horn’s misleading and poorly researched story -- about the links between Srdja Popovic, cofounder of Otpor! and CANVAS, and a crappy corporate spy outfit named Stratfor -- does no one any good.
The Project is a partnership between three organisations from Albania (T.I.C.A., Tirana), Bosnia and Herzegovina (SCCA/pro.ba, Sarajevo) and Serbia (kuda.org, Novi Sad), designed as a long term research and production project with multidisciplinary and multimedia approaches, focused on artistic practices and different media phenomena (individual and collective) and their perception, valuation and influence on the experiences of transition societies from perspectives of different generations. Socio-political images of those three countries are only the starting points for the project, which in a broad sense attempts to encompass past, present and future situations in community, transitional transformations of individual and collective identities in general, critically observing the Balkan’s position towards Europe and vice versa.
